Mary Mitchell Blair was the daughter and the wife of wealthy Chicago bankers. By the end of the 19th century, she had assembled an internationally acclaimed art collection. By the standards of her upbringing and social status her life was conventional. What is not conventional is her obsession with the acquisition of the most beautiful book in early Christendom.

A Collection of Hours Blair MacInnes 9780692798348 Books

A Collection of Hours by Blair MacInnes is a rare find--an historical novel that rings true. That it's based on the author's family makes it even more unusual.

Set in Chicago at the turn of the century (the 19th into the 20th), it rewards the reader with a vivid sense of what life, both luxurious and impoverished, was like in that time and place.

But it's Mim (Mary Mitchell Blair, based on the author's great-grandmother) who captures the reader. She is a woman born to wealth and privilege in a rigid society, but she is a spirited, independent thinker and an art collector with an eye for beauty and quality rivaled by none.

This collector's spirit drives her into what can only be called lust for a rare book--a Book of Hours. The adventurers and emotions involved in her quest are gripping.

A great read.
A sensitive and well-researched look at another age and its priorities denoting wealth, status and artistic merit. Especially interesting to consider in comparison with contemporary measures of artistic success, social standing, and how they are both measured and achieved.
I loved this book! I hope Blair MacInnes writes another one.
This is a wonderful book. It's well written, I love the characters and as I read along I really wanted to know what happens. I hope there will be a sequel because I'd like to spend more time with this engaging family. Mim, the protagonist, is an intriguing character with deep interests, a sense of humor and a very strong will. Interspersed with the text are several lovely illustrations bringing it all to life. I enthusiastically recommend it!
A Collection of Hours, which is a great read, is a novel that builds and grows stronger as it goes along. It gives a vivid sense of what life was like in Chicago, New York, and America itself in the late 1800s. The story is compelling, and the characters—Mim especially—are ones I came to know and care about. I found the scenes that take place in Mercy Hospital and those in New York City to be especially gripping. There’s history here, as well as mystery and adventure. The author left things at the end with just enough unresolved to make me hopeful for a continuation; I’ll be on the lookout for a sequel. This is historical fiction at its best.
If you are a fan of Downton Abbey, I promise you will be equally enthralled by A Collection of Hours. Although one is set in England, and the other in Chicago., both are excellent examples of historical fiction and tell dramatic tales about wealthy families living at the turn of the 20th century. There is romance, the clash of world events and compelling personal characters to keep you intrigued as the plot unwinds. Ladies, slip on your long gloves and gentlemen your white tie and tails and start reading …
I enjoyed this book very much.

"A Collection of Hours" in my opinion, is a well written and a well researched book about a woman who was the wife and daughter of wealthy bankers in Chicago during the 1890s. She was an acclaimed art collector who would go to great lengths to find the ultimate prize.
