LONDON 1600. When the Earl of Essex is removed from command and placed under arrest for reaching a forbidden truce with the Irish rebels, Serjeant Noah Ames reluctantly accepts a commission to investigate the earl’s fitness for command, and the two are pitted against each other once again. Meanwhile, Noah’s beautiful daughter, Lady Jessica, has sought to remarry into the nobility, but events have thus far frustrated her plans. One day, Noah attends a briefing where the Queen’s new commander displays maps of English military positions in Ireland. Noah’s suspicions are aroused when he sees that one map is missing a watermark appearing on all the others. When he informs his young barrister friend Jonathan of his concern, he inadvertently sets in motion events that throw Jonathan and Lady Jessica together on a journey across England into ever greater peril.

. . . involving Queen Elizabeth, Lord Essex, conspiracies, betrayals, tests of loyalty. Ames is doubly vulnerable as a Hebrew (known as such publicly) and selected by Elizabeth to investigate Essex’s conduct during his past military campaigns and to report his findings to her. Treason. It centers around a missing map of the English fortresses in Ireland and possible Spanish plans for an invasion. Characters are sharply drawn as previously, with depth and color and interest. There is a deeply personal side to the story involving Ames’s daughter and his best friend Jonathan. But did they use these words and expressions in 1600 England: “hands him a good gratuity”, “throw a spanner into it”; “check with” someone? Or do we have these and other anachronisms popping out of the text every so often? Overall, a gripping story plot with interesting, lively characters involved in a well-structured fictional plot, embedded in historical events realistically portrayed.Product details

The Impress of Heaven In the Den of the English Lion Book 2 edition by Neal Roberts Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is a terrific series and I can't wait for the next book release
Having read the first 2 books in this series I can hardly wait for the third. Well researched, excellent character development, authentically written, these books draw you in and never let you go. Kudos Neal Roberts, continue on this path. You leave me with a thirst for more.
really good read about an interesting time of history...written by a lawyer about a barrister in the time of queen elizabeth
Excellent character development and historical accuracy. Good twists and turns and a sweet love story, to boot. You really come to hate the Earl of Essex.
The story continues, character development building. Action to keep you turning the pages. Plot line realistic, with enough background to provide texture for the story.
Thanks.
I am particularly drawn to Elizabethean historical fiction. While I enjoyed the first book, many of its weaknesses have been addressed in this volume. The characters are better drawn, the pacing is improved, and in general it's a better book. My only real quibble is a rather lengthy re-summarization of the plot during the "reveal" of the major mystery of the book. And then the tieing up all the loose emdd/setting the stage for book 3 was just a bit too tidy. But those are small potatoes next to the whole which is a wonderfully entertaining story.
The historical and political novel, beautifully descriptive of the era, offers a glimpse into the Elizabethan Period. The expression, “the Impress of Heaven,” signifies hope and faith. The story focuses on the Act (of succession), meaning, who would lead England after the Queen’s demise as she bore no heir. Ironically, it is forbidden to speak of the Act.
The novel develops two separate plots that link in murder and treason. The author peppers the language with the vocabulary of the times and addresses the embedded anti-Semitism in English society. Roberts also reveals the strict code of civility shared among the higher class.
